94pts Tyson Stelzer 'Champagne Guide 2020-2021

Dumenil joined the 'Special Club' group in 2012 and this is their much awaited debut release. For a wine to become a 'Special Club' offering, it must be the very best that a producer can achieve. It has to be grown, produced, bottled and matured entirely at the members estate. The finished wine will have been blind tasted twice before a panel of judges to see if it meets the 'Special Club' criteria, and if not to standard, cannot be released.

A 'Special Club' release is the prestige cuvee and 'essence' of each individual producer - always a guarantee of quality.

The Dumenil Special Club 2013 is a blend of 60% Pinot Noir and 40% Chardonnay sourced from Chigny-les-Rose, Rilly la Montagne, and Ludes - all Premier Cru villages in the Montagne des Reims. Rigorous selection takes place to ensure that each individual component is the finest expression available, and worthy of being a 'Special Club' release. 2013 was a low yielding vintrage but of exceptional quality in the Montagne des Reims. Still very youthful, showing white floral and brioche notes on the nose. The palate is very fine, there is an underlying power from the Pinot overlayed by the elegance and finesse of the Chardonnay component. Quite refined and linear and hints at how well the wine will evolve for many years to come.

Delicate nose that opens to aromas of youth like white fruit and citrus. Frank attack that extends over a very fresh and lemony mouth. Good length for this wine promises a nice aging potential.

Champagne Dumenil was founded in 1874 by Mr. Elie and Cecile Dumenil. The family tradition has been passed on to the great-granddaughters of the founders, Mrs. Frédérique Poret-Rebeyrolle with her husband Mr. Hugues Poret. Both coming from winemaking families, Hugues is in charge of the vineyards and Frédérique is assisted by her mother with marketing and winemaking process. Dumenil Champagne is made with grapes coming from vines that belong to the family, 8 hectares totaling 45 parcels in only Premier Cru terroir: Chigny-les-Roses, Rilly-la-Montagne and Ludes.

The entire vineyard is manage according to the implementation of environment-friendly vine growing techniques called Sustainable Viticulture, which aim to limit interventions and to use natural products in order to no longer treat systematically in a preventive way but by taking into account sensibilities of the vines to disease.

Hand harvested on hillsides with selective and strict pruning. Only the cuvees (1st pressing) are selected. Full malolactic fermentation is completed for roundness and smoothness.
Disgorgement is done 4-6 months prior to shipment and given a dosage of wine and cane sugar.
